Gantry Cranes

Gantry cranes are a type of overhead crane system where the entire structure is supported by freestanding legs that travel on ground-level rails or wheels. Unlike bridge cranes that depend on building columns or runways, gantry cranes are self-supporting and are ideal for outdoor environments or applications where overhead support structures are not available. They are widely used in shipyards, construction sites, container yards, and manufacturing facilities requiring heavy lifting and long-span handling.

Main Components

A gantry crane consists of several essential structural and mechanical components:

  • Main Girder: The horizontal beam that supports the hoisting trolley. It can be a single or double girder design.

  • Supporting Legs: Vertical columns that support the main girder and connect to the ground rails or wheels.

  • End Carriages / Wheels: Located at the bottom of the legs, these allow the crane to travel along the rails or ground surface.

  • Hoisting Trolley: Moves along the girder and carries the hoist used for lifting and lowering loads.

  • Hoist: Can be a wire rope or chain hoist; it performs the lifting function.

  • Electrical System: Powers all crane movements and includes control panels, motors, and cabling.

  • Control Options: Includes pendant control, wireless remote control, or operator cabin depending on operation needs.
